Rooibos: The Naturally Caffeine-Free South African Brew
Rooibos (pronounced roy-boss) is also known as Red Bush, Rooibosch, or simply Rooibos tea. While it’s often called a tea, Rooibos is actually an herbal infusion made from the Aspalathus linearis plant native to South Africa’s Cederberg mountains.
Unlike traditional black or green teas, Rooibos contains no tea leaves — which means it’s naturally caffeine-free, rich in antioxidants, and gentle on the stomach. Its warm, slightly nutty, and naturally sweet flavor makes it a versatile drink for any time of day.
How to Brew Rooibos Tea
Tea-to-water ratio: Use about 2 teaspoons (2–3 grams) of loose Rooibos for every 1 cup (250 ml) of water.
Water temperature: Heat water to 95°C / 203°F — just below boiling.
Steeping time: Steep for 3–6 minutes. A longer infusion brings out deeper, bolder flavors without bitterness (since Rooibos doesn’t contain tannins like black tea).
Strain & serve: Enjoy as is, or experiment with additions.
Serving Suggestions
With or without milk: Rooibos pairs beautifully with milk or cream, much like black tea.
Try a “Rooibos Latte”: Froth warm milk and pour over a strong Rooibos infusion for a cozy, caffeine-free alternative to a café latte.
Natural sweetness: Rooibos already has a honey-like flavor, but you can add a drizzle of honey, maple syrup, or agave if you prefer a sweeter cup.
Iced Rooibos: Chill your brew and serve over ice with a slice of orange or lemon for a refreshing summer drink.
Why Drink Rooibos Tea?
Caffeine-free: Perfect for evenings, kids, or anyone avoiding caffeine.
Rich in antioxidants: Contains aspalathin and quercetin, which may support overall wellness.
Naturally low in tannins: Unlike black tea, Rooibos won’t taste bitter even if you steep it longer.
Versatile: Delicious hot, iced, plain, or with milk.
My new favorite coffee is the Death By Chocolate! It’s so smooth and not bitter at all. I love it. I also love the whipped honeys - they are great on toast.
