Momma’s Meatloaf Burgers: A Comfort Food Classic Reinvented - Java Momma

Who doesn’t love a slice of warm, savory meatloaf paired with a dollop of sweet, tangy sauce? Now, imagine that classic comfort food transformed into a handheld masterpiece: Momma’s Meatloaf Burgers! Perfect for a casual dinner or a summer BBQ, these juicy burgers bring all the nostalgia of mom’s meatloaf with the added joy of eating it burger-style.

Why Meatloaf Burgers?
Leftover meatloaf sandwiches are a classic hit, so why not skip the leftovers and make them as burgers from the get-go? These patties are loaded with flavor, combining a blend of ground beef and pork with sautéed onions, breadcrumbs, and a splash of brewed coffee (yes, coffee!) for an extra depth of flavor. Topped with a homemade sauce that’s sweet, smoky, and tangy, this dish takes your burger game to a whole new level.

What Makes This Recipe Special?

  • Comfort Meets Convenience: Meatloaf in a burger form means no slicing, no crumbling—just ready-to-eat perfection.
  • Bursting with Flavor: From the richness of Momma’s Blend coffee to the hint of bourbon maple seasoning, each bite is packed with savory goodness.
  • Crowd-Pleasing Versatility: These burgers are perfect for weeknight dinners, backyard BBQs, or even your next game day spread.

Pro Tips for the Best Meatloaf Burgers:

  1. Don’t Overmix the Meat: Mixing too much can make the burgers dense and tough. Combine the ingredients gently until just mixed.
  2. Perfect Patties: Form uniform patties for even cooking. A slight indentation in the center will prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
  3. Sauce It Up: Don’t skimp on the sauce—it caramelizes beautifully on the grill or skillet, adding a rich, sticky glaze that makes these burgers irresistible.

Serving Suggestions:
Toast some soft potato buns for the ultimate burger experience and serve with classic sides like crispy fries, a fresh green salad, or some creamy coleslaw. Pair with an iced glass of Momma’s Blend coffee or your favorite cold brew for the ultimate flavor combo.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground meat. A mix of beef (85% lean) and pork.
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped (sauté til soft if desired)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 3 tablespoons Momma’s Blend, brewed coffee
  • 1 tablespoon Bourbon Maple Hops
  • or 1 tablespoon Fan Freakin-tastic Fry Seasoning
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 1 ½ teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • 2 ½ tablespoon brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon Pennsylvania Pepper
  • 2 teaspoon Bourbon Maple Hops or
  • 2 teaspoons Fan Freakin-tastic Fry Seasoning

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients (ketchup, white wine vinegar, brown sugar, Bourbon Maple Hops or seasoning, and Pennsylvania Pepper). Mix well until fully blended. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add all burger ingredients: ground beef and pork, onion, egg, ketchup, breadcrumbs, brewed coffee, seasoning, and salt and pepper. Mix gently until just combined—do not overmix to prevent tough burgers.
  3. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties and set aside.
  4. Cook the Burgers:
  5. Heat a skillet, grill, or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the burger patties on the surface.
  6. Spread 1-2 T. of prepared sauce on the top of each patty. Cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip the burgers and spread another 1-2 T. of sauce on the second side.
  7. After flipping the burgers over spread an additional 1-2 T. of sauce onto each burger, while it continues to cook on the second side.
  8. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes or until the burgers reach your desired doneness (medium doneness is ~160°F).
  9. Toast the Buns:
  10. While the burgers cook, lightly toast your buns (we recommend potato buns) for extra flavor and texture.
  11. Once the burger is cooked, remove from pan to rest, while preparing buns.
  12. Assemble the Burgers:
  13. Place the cooked burger patties on the bottom bun. Add any desired toppings, like lettuce, tomato, or cheese, and top with the other half of the bun.
  14. Serve and Enjoy:
  15. Serve immediately with your favorite sides like fries, a salad, or coleslaw.
