What Makes Champurrado Special?

Champurrado is a chocolate-based atole, a popular drink in Mexico with roots in ancient Mesoamerican culture. Thickened with masa harina (corn flour) and flavored with cinnamon and piloncillo, it’s traditionally enjoyed during celebrations or paired with tamales for a delicious treat.

Our twist? Substituting Mexican Spiced Ground Chocolate for the traditional Mexican chocolate tablet brings an extra layer of richness and warmth to the recipe.

Why You’ll Love This Champurrado:

  • Warm and Comforting: The thick, creamy texture is perfect for chilly mornings or festive evenings.
  • Rich and Flavorful: With spiced chocolate and a hint of cinnamon, every sip is indulgent and satisfying.
  • Easy to Make: With simple ingredients and just a few steps, you can whip up this traditional treat in no time.

Tips for the Perfect Champurrado:

  1. Achieve the Perfect Thickness: Add more or less masa harina to adjust the texture to your liking.
  2. Sweeten to Taste: Start with ¼ cup piloncillo, but feel free to add more if you like it sweeter.
  3. Make It Vegan-Friendly: Use almond milk or coconut milk for a dairy-free option without sacrificing creaminess.

This drink is perfect for:

  • Holiday mornings: Pair it with tamales or sweet bread for a festive breakfast.
  • Family gatherings: Serve it in a big pot and let everyone ladle out their own mug.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk (or water, or a mix of both)
  • ¼ cup masa harina (corn flour)
  • ⅓ cup Mexican Spiced Ground Chocolate (or 1 tablet of Mexican chocolate as an alternative)
  • ¼ cup piloncillo (or brown sugar, adjust to taste)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Prepare the Masa Harina Slurry:
  2. In a small bowl, whisk the masa harina with 1 cup of water or milk to create a smooth slurry. Set aside.
  3. Heat the Milk and Spices:
  4. In a large saucepan, combine the remaining 3 cups of milk, the cinnamon stick, and piloncillo.
  5. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until the piloncillo fully dissolves and the mixture is warm and fragrant.
  6. Incorporate the Masa Harina Slurry:
  7. Gradually add the masa harina slurry to the saucepan while stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  8. Add the Chocolate:
  9. Stir in the Mexican Spiced Ground Chocolate (or tablet of Mexican chocolate) and whisk until fully melted and smooth.
  10. Allow the mixture to gently simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  11. Finish with Vanilla:
  12. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  13. Serve:
  14. Strain the champurrado (if desired, for a smoother texture) and pour it into mugs.
  15. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a small piece of piloncillo for a festive, authentic touch.
