🧁 Death By Chocolate Cupcakes

  • 1 (15.25 oz) box Dark Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1 cup brewed Death By Chocolate Coffee
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil

Method

For the Cupcakes:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, Death By Chocolate Coffee, eggs, and oil.

For the Earl Grey Milk:

  1. Warm milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it simmers. Remove from heat and add Earl Grey’s Anatomy tea.
  2. Steep 10 minutes, then strain and cool. Store up to 3 days in the fridge.

For the Earl Grey Buttercream:

  2. Add Earl Grey Milk, vanilla, and salt. Mix on low until smooth and creamy.

To Decorate:

  1. Spread a base layer of frosting over cooled cupcakes.
  2. Pipe crisscrossing “bandages” over each cupcake, leaving a small gap for eyes.
  3. Press in two candy eyes and chill for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • Use flat or ribbon piping tips for the best mummy effect.
  • Swap candy eyes for white chocolate chips dotted with melted chocolate.
  • Keep cupcakes refrigerated until serving to hold their shape.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp Earl Grey’s Anatomy tea
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2½ Tbsp Earl Grey milk, room temperature
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 (15.25 oz) box Dark Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1 cup brewed Death By Chocolate Coffee
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips
  • Sugar candy eyes

Directions

  1. For the Cupcakes
  2. Preheat oven to 350*. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, Death by Chocolate Coffee, eggs and veggie oil.
  3. Place cupcake liners in pan and fill with batter to no more than 2/3 full. Sprinkle mini chocolate chips evenly over the top of each cupcake.
  4. Place in oven and bake for 18-20 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely while preparing frosting.
  5. For the Earl Grey Milk
  6. Warm milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring mixture to a simmer. Turn off heat and add Earl Grey's Anatomy tea. Stir and steep for 10 minutes.
  7. Strain, to remove tea from milk, pressing all liquid out from leaves. Store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature when ready to use.
  8. For the Earl Grey Buttercream
  9. In a large bowl, cream butter on medium-high until creamy and light in color.
  10. With the mixer on low speed, add powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, scraping down sides of bowl after each addition.
  11. Add Earl Grey milk, vanilla, and salt. Continue mixing on low speed until fully combined and smooth, scraping down the bowl as needed.
  12. To decorate
  13. Spread a base layer of the Earl Grey Buttercream over each cupcake. Place remaining Buttercream into a piping bag with tip of choice (round or flat work best to create mummy bandages)
  14. Attach the Eyes, by gently pressing two candy sugar eyes into the frosting, where you would like them to peek out, making sure to space them slightly apart.
  15. Starting above and below the eyes, take your filled piping bag and pipe crisscrossing lines across the cupcake to mimic wrapped bandages. Don’t cover the eyes!
  16. Place finished cupcakes in fridge for 10 minutes to firm up frosting before serving.
