The roast for people who read "dark roast" and thought, "sure, but how dark?"
This is the same Sumatra Mandheling behind our medium roast, pushed to its darkest profile. Chocolate, cherry, and vanilla are all still there — just deeper and a little sweeter at this roast level leaning towards caramel, with an edge that wasn't there before.
Single-origin from Sumatra, air-roasted to order using solar power — 100% Arabica, no flavoring added. Works hot, but it's just as much at home over ice or as a cold brew base — the depth holds up when it's cold. Available in whole bean, ground, and single-serve pods, for whoever decided "dark roast" was a starting point, not a destination.

The Beans
100% Arabica, single-origin Sumatra Mandheling — the same bean behind our medium roast, taken to our darkest roast profile. Air-roasted to order using solar power, just like everything else in our lineup, just pushed further.
No flavoring added. At this roast level, the chocolate and cherry notes deepen, and a vanilla sweetness comes through that's a little unexpected for a roast this dark. Part of our standing lineup, not a limited release.
Nutritional Info
Black coffee is essentially zero-calorie — what you add is your call. No sugar, no sweeteners, no added carbohydrates — naturally keto-friendly. No gluten added — not a dedicated gluten-free facility.
How to Brew
This one holds up across brew methods — French press and drip both bring out the chocolate, cherry, and vanilla notes at full depth. For drip, start with about 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 oz of water; this roast can handle a stronger ratio if you like it bold.
Want it cold? This is a strong candidate for cold brew — coarsely ground coffee steeped in cold water for 12-18 hours, then diluted to taste. Works just as well brewed hot and poured over ice.
Prefer grab-and-go? The single-serve pods (12-count) are compatible with Keurig® 1.0 and 2.0 machines — no scooping, no guessing, just press and go.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Sumatra Extra Dark Coffee
Is this coffee easy on the stomach?
It tends to be — even more so than our other Sumatra roasts. Sumatra Mandheling is naturally lower in acid than most origins, and at our darkest roast level, that acid drops even further thanks to the longer roast time. Add our air-roasting on top of that, and this is about as gentle as it gets. No guarantees, because everyone's different, but if coffee and your stomach don't always get along, this is a strong contender.
Why does this coffee taste like chocolate, cherry, and vanilla if there's no flavoring added?
That's just the bean. Coffee picks up flavor characteristics from where it's grown, how it's processed, and how it's roasted — no flavoring required. This is the same Sumatra Mandheling behind our medium roast, and at this darker roast level those chocolate and cherry notes deepen, with a vanilla sweetness that comes through unexpectedly for a roast this dark. Nothing's been added to get there.
Can I make this iced or cold brew?
Yes — this one's built for it. Brew it hot and pour over ice, or use it for cold brew: coarsely ground coffee steeped in cold water for 12-18 hours, then diluted to taste. The depth at this roast level holds up well either way, hot or cold.
Do you offer a decaf version?
Not for this one — Sumatra Extra Dark is currently available in regular only. If decaf is a dealbreaker, our decaf lineup is worth a look.
What's the difference between the bag and the single-serve pods?
Same coffee, different format. The bag gives you flexibility on grind and brew method — whole bean or ground, your call. The single-serve pods come in 12-count boxes and are compatible with Keurig® 1.0 and 2.0 machines — grab-and-go with no measuring required.
Is this coffee keto-friendly?
Yes — black coffee has zero sugar, zero sweeteners, and no added carbohydrates. This coffee isn't flavored, so there's nothing added to begin with. Naturally keto-friendly as a factual spec, not a lifestyle claim.
Does a darker roast mean more caffeine?
Not really — if anything, slightly less by volume. Longer roasting causes the beans to expand and lose density, so a scoop of this roast has marginally less caffeine than the same scoop of a lighter roast. The bigger factor is always how much coffee you use, not how dark it's roasted. This one's about depth and flavor, not a caffeine boost.
What other coffees pair well with this one?
If dark roasts are your thing, our other bold roasts are worth a look. And if you want something to eat alongside it, our snack line holds up to a serious cup.
