Let’s talk Macros.  What are they?  Why do we need them?  Why are we keeping track of them?

Macro is short for macronutrients. The shortened word Macro is very common lingo in the Keto Community. Macronutrients are the fuel we use to be active. The combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrates that sustain us. Getting your macros to the right calibration (and getting your body there by tracking your intake) will put your body in nutritional ketosis and keep you there. That is where the fat burning occurs – then weight loss – and add in some exercise – and you’re dropping weight like you never thought possible. Stalling will happen.  Recalculate your macros, fast for 18-24 hours or up your water intake and it will break the stall.

How do you determine your macros??

Determine your BMI first. Then you can use this Macro calculator to determine the grams of protein, fat, and carbs you should be consuming to meet your goals. Plug them into your meal tracker.  I use the MyFitnessPal app – you can friend me if you’d like. We can travel on this journey together! Search for TheJavaMomma on MFP.  You can use the free version of the app, unless you want the premium.  There are advantages to premium, but it’s not necessary.  Other good trackers are Lose It, FatSecret, Chron-o-meter, and SparkPeople.  I have never used them, but I did research them for this post and they seem easy to use and well programmed.

Now that you know your macros, it’s time to get started.

Becoming fat adapted is not hard, but it’s a commitment. If you’re a chocolate fiend like me, I found it fun to look for ways to keto-fy my favorite foods. To get all of your fat in for the day is sometimes hard. Fat bombs will get you to the necessary macros. You can make them yourself, but I prefer to purchase them. FBomb has some amazing nut butters that will satisfy your sweet and savory tooth.  They also have some oils. I use the oils in my coffee (high fat breakfast!), in my salads, vegetables and cooking. I like to get my MCT oil from Amazon. I just started using some of the Bulletproof brand items. Their chocolate bars – OMG. Amazing. I got a 3oz MCT oil because I want to see how it compares to the one I frequently use. The one I get from Amazon has a really smooth flavor, with a hint of – maybe a nutty flavor, but I love it.

I started kind of slow with replacing things when I began keto. I removed everything from my home that would tempt me. I bought the things that were low carb or zero carb. I read a LOT. Keto blogs like Ruled Me were lifesavers, and some groups on Facebook were good. But some are really hardcore, so I just watched and took notes.
